Investment in PDI Tak Eco Co., Ltd. and Expansion of Waste Treatment Business in Thailand

DOWA ECO-SYSTEM CO., LTD. (14-1, Sotokanda 4-chome, Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; Capital: ¥1,000 million; President: Kenichi Sasaki), a subsidiary of DOWA HOLDINGS CO., LTD. (same address; Capital: ¥36,400 million; President: Masao Yamada) agreed to acquire 49% of the shares of PDI Tak Eco Co., Ltd. (Tak Province, Thailand; Capital: 10 million baht), a subsidiary of Padaeng Industry Public Company Limited (hereinafter called “PDI”) (Bangkok, Thailand; Capital: 2,260 million baht; Managing Director: Francis Vanbellen), and conducts a study with a view toward the joint management of a waste treatment business.

The amount of discharged waste is increasing significantly in Thailand, one of the major industrial nations in ASEAN. However, sufficient waste treatment facilities are not provided at present. To address the situation, the Thai government announced measures including the construction of more waste treatment facilities.

DOWA ECO-SYSTEM CO., LTD. started to expand its operation to Southeast Asia in 2009. It is currently developing the environmental management and recycling business in four countries: Indonesia, Thailand, Singapore and Myanmar. PDI, which will work as a partner, is a company established by the Thai government and a European private company. It has been listed on the Thai Stock Exchange since 1987, and engaged mainly in the mining and refining of zinc.

To address growing needs for the proper treatment of waste in Thailand, PDI, which has solid business bases locally, and DOWA ECO-SYSTEM CO., LTD., which has a wealth of experience in waste treatment businesses, have decided to collaborate in conducting a study relating to the joint operation of a new waste treatment facility. Going forward, the two companies will work on the construction of a new treatment facility while conducting discussions with related administrative institutions and so on.

DOWA ECO-SYSTEM CO., LTD. will seek to expand the environmental management and recycling business broadly and contribute to solving environmental issues in Asia, as the region is expected to continue growing.
